Vejer de la Frontera

Vejer de la Frontera, a Spanish ´Pueblo Blanco´was declared a national monument in 1978. Set on a hill overlooking the Straits of Gibraltar it is surrounded by the lushness of orange trees and sunflower-filled fields in early Summer. In the town, architecture of the local houses, churches and monuments strongly reflects the Moorish culture which is so much a part of the history of this area of Spain.

Your early morning stroll to classes will take you through the winding alleyways as townsfolk are getting their day started and you’ll be passing numerous delightful little bars and cafes should a need for a quick coffee or better still, a small sherry arise!

This is fruit farming country but is also known for its bull breeding skills. Bird watchers will be in seventh heaven and in a dilemma as to what to photograph first. The lavish stretches of the unspoilt beaches of Costa de la Luz are right on the doorstep. Kite surfing, horse riding, golf or yoga classes are all available locally and Annie and her staff will always be pleased to answer queries or point you in the right direction.

Plenty of Friendly Faces!

Annie’s well known in this small town and as one of her pupils you’ll find a friendly welcome everywhere.

Around Vejer

Vegetable Market
Vejer
Meet the lovely Maribel who runs a lushly filled fruit and vegetable stall in the small market close to our kitchen. Much of the produce, tomatoes, lemons, courgettes and onions comes directly from her small farm close by. You may want to pause a while, close your eyes, take a deep breath and let the wonderful mouth-watering, mixed aromas waft over you.

Carniceria
Vejer
After many years spent alongside his Uncle, learning all the tricks of the trade and a life-time’s worth of knowledge, Paco was allowed to take over the carniceria. He has made a wonderful job of this handed-down family business, shopping here is an experience not to be missed – chairs are provided to take the weight off your feet whilst you wait for your turn and listen to Paco passing on cooking tips. Paco makes his own delicious chorizo and other local delicacies and sells the very best pork, chicken and beef Andalucia has to offer.

Local Fish Market
Vejer
Manoli runs the fish stall in the small market. Each morning her brother provides her with the best of fish and shellfish freshly caught from the seas around Cadiz and Barbate. If it hasn’t been caught locally, you won’t catch it on Manoli’s stall. We should mention that fresh tuna is only available here for a few weeks in the year – during the traditional Almodraba.

Tapas Bars
Vejer
Pedro´s bar is always, unsurprisingly, a hive of activity. Here, as well as good company, you can always enjoy a copa of chilled manzanilla accompanied by yummy olives. A plate of jamon and picos is a simple but nonetheless unforgettable gastronomic experience.  His home made tapas such as atun con cebolla (cooked with hand picked, wild oregano), choco con guisantes and spectacular ensaladilla or Russian salad (don´t underestimate this dish – every family prides itself on its secret recipe!) will always leave you wanting more.

Wine Emporium
Vejer
Ramon´s wine emporium, Viña y Mar is something rather special. Located in the old town, very close to Casa Alegre (reason enough for buying it!) Ramon worked as a wine distributor in Madrid for 8 years before bringing all his experience back to Vejer to set up shop. His selection of wines and sherries is fabulous. He’s always more than happy to share his impressive knowledge and we’re lucky enough to have him select the most interesting offerings by region and grape variety. His shelves also offer other temptations, selections of olive oils, vinegars, salts, wine accessories and jars of delicious local produce. Stock up on foodie delights for friends and family and don’t forget to choose some holiday take-home for yourself.

Everyone who spends time on the Atlantic coast with its fresh, crystal clear waters and gentle rolling waves wants to come back sooner rather than later. The sea breeze whips away any cobwebs and leaves you feeling both energetic and relaxed. Just to give you an idea of distances, a walk along the beach from El Palmar to Cabo de Trafalgar, site of the famous naval battle in 1805, will take approx 1.5 hours.
